Asthma is a major issue in New Zealand. One in four of our kids and one in six adults suffer from asthma, over 600,000 people. It hasn’t always been this common and research hasn’t come up with a definite answer as to why it is becoming more common, but our lifestyles do seem to have many contributing factors. The major suspects seem to be allergies, diet and poor digestion.
Due to recent changes, accredited pharmacists are now permitted to supply a selection of oral contraceptives to certain women. This is an exciting change to improve convenience for women who fit the criteria. We'll take a look at the range of contraceptives available through pharmacy.
As we head into the warmer weather, it is a great idea to have a little first aid kit for bites and stings that can be all too common. Insects such as mosquitos, fleas, sand flies and midges can bite to leave an itchy spot, whereas bee and wasp stings can be more severe.
Every day in New Zealand, 9 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. To reduce our risk, the NZBCF encourages us to be breast aware; reduce our risk; act on breast changes and regularly have screening mammograms. Meet Sam, a gorgeous Hawke’s Bay 9 year old boy full of life. You may have seen his story, unfortunately Sam has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Sam needs treatment at Starship Hospital for the next 3 years. What is worse is that Sam’s Dad, Derek, has undergone treatment for male breast cancer in 1995 and 2009 and his Mum, Helen, was also diagnosed and fought breast cancer 2½ years ago. Sam has 2 siblings who have had most of their childhood memories linked in some way to cancer.
