Pain serves as a signal that something is not quite right within our body, resulting from injury, illness, disease, hormonal fluctuations or stress. It can vary in intensity, duration and the individual’s reaction to pain, and treatment is tailored accordingly.
Pain relief medications are available in the pharmacy, but pain management may also include complementary medicines to get the best results. Here we look at four with evidence for their effectiveness.
Turmeric
Turmeric, which contains the active ingredient curcumin, has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties to alleviate joint pain and stiffness, improve joint function, boost physical performance, and decrease reliance on Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories. Although turmeric has limited solubility and absorption in the gut when taken alone, various formulations enhance these aspects. Generally, it is well tolerated; however, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort.
Boswellia
Traditionally used to treat inflammatory conditions, Boswellia has been found to be effective in alleviating pain, stiffness, and enhancing joint function in individuals with osteoarthritis. It has also demonstrated the ability to modify the disease and lessen cartilage damage. Rare side effects may include gastrointestinal upset, headaches, and itching. For enhanced benefits, Boswellia can be combined with Turmeric.
Omega-3
EPA and DHA, derived from fish oils, have been recognised for their ability to lower inflammation, ease joint pain and stiffness, reduce back pain, dysmenorrhea, and shorten the duration of migraines. They are generally well tolerated, particularly when using enteric-coated capsules to prevent fishy reflux and taste.
Magnesium
Magnesium, often deficient in many individuals, plays a crucial role in nerve and smooth muscle function and may offer relieve in post-op, nerve, migraine and fibromyalgia pain. Additionally, it may ease muscle aches, spasms, cramps, dysmenorrhea, and restless leg syndrome.
