A form of arthritis, gout, usually affects the big toe, causing the skin over the joint to become red and shiny. Untreated, attacks can become more frequent and severe and permanent damage to the joints is likely. Gout is caused by the build up of uric acid from proteins from our diet, causing small crystals to form in the joints, resulting in swelling and pain.
Allopurinol, is used to prevent gout long-term by reducing the levels of uric acid in the blood. It is taken preventatively, even if you have no gout symptoms at the time.
