Epipen Junior is available as a Pharmacist only medication, which means that it can be purchased without a doctor's prescription, in consultation with a pharmacist. Epipen Junior is an auto-injector device containing Adrenaline for the treatment of severe allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis. The allergic reaction can be triggered by many different things, but common allergens are foods (nuts, dairy etc), medicines, insect bites or stings.
Epipen Junior contains Adrenaline (also called Epinephrine) 150mcg in a 0.3ml injection. Each pen gives one injection only.
Epipen Junior 150mcg/0.3ml is the auto-injector children between 15kg and 30kg in weight should use. Children over 30kg in weight and adults, require the Epipen auto-injector (300mcg/0.3ml).
Form a fist around the Epipen Junior and pull off the BLUE safety release
Place the ORANGE end HARD into the OUTER THIGH so it "CLICKS" and HOLD for 10 seconds
If you are needing to use Epipen Junior, call for an ambulance immediately for follow up care.
Epipen Junior must be injected into the outer thigh not into the buttocks. If it is accidently injected anywhere other than the outer thigh emergency treatment should be sort.
Check your Epipen Junior regularly to see that it is still before it's expiry date and that the solution inside is clear and colourless. The instructions on the pack direct you to a small window to do that.
Before using Epipen Junior, tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions, especially noting asthma, depression, thyroid disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Please tell your doctor any medicines you take. You should not use Epipen Junior if you are allergic to any of it's ingredients.
Common side effects from Epipen Junior include an increase in heart rate, stronger or irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea and vomiting, difficulty breathing, paleness, dizziness, weakness or shakiness, headache, apprehension, nervousness or anxiety. These side effects usually go away quickly, especially if you rest.
