The influenza (flu) vaccine is an inactivated form of the virus given to trigger your body to build immunity to it so if you are exposed again, then you can fight it off quickly and without significant symptoms. Common symptoms of flu are fever, congestion, headache, aching and tiredness but it can be life threatening in some people. As the virus mutates every year, the strains of virus in the vaccine are updated so you need to have vaccine administered annually. From 1st April 2017, Pharmac and the DHBs have allowed Pharmacist Vaccinators to offer free flu vaccines to adults over 65 years and pregnant women. This is an exciting step for pharmacy, but also makes it so easy to have your vaccination this year. If you are having your flu vaccination with a Pharmacist Vaccinator, you won’t need to get a script from your doctor for it, just make an appointment with the pharmacy when they are offering the service. You can be confident in the expertise of a Pharmacist Vaccinator, to qualify, a Pharmacist will have completed a training course, been assessed and the pharmacy approved for safe storage and administration of the vaccines and have first aid equipment on hand for rare allergic reactions.
Autumn is the best time of year to be vaccinated to allow the vaccine to work before the flu season starts. It is not uncommon to experience some mild side effects, a little heat, pain and swelling in the arm but these usually go away within a few days. If you are under 65 years and have a chronic health condition, you are still eligible for a free vaccine through your doctor. If you aren’t eligible for a funded vaccine, you can still get your vaccine through pharmacy for a fee.
